ISLAMABAD: The chief election commissioner of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) tendered his resignation on Saturday after reportedly developing differences with Chairman Imran Khan on intra-party elections.
PTI Chairman Imran Khan has accepted the resignation of Tasneem Noorani with ‘regret’, but decided to hold intra-party elections on schedule. In a press statement on Saturday, PTI said that Senator Noman Wazir, an existing member of the election commission, will be the interim CEC. By March 31, the vacant positions in the EC will also be filled, it added.
Sources privy to the development said that Noorani had been demanding that every single office of the party should be elected. He was of the view that the party should go for ‘genuine’ intra-party elections, terming nomination of office-bearers an ‘undemocratic’ approach.
On the other hand, Imran held the view that only one seat of every tier should be elected and the rest of the office-bearers should be nominated. The statement issued by the PTI, however, said that it was party’s prerogative to decide what type of election should be held.
